Mets lose prospect Aarom Baldiris on waivers

Creating a spot on their roster for their new Japanese pitcher cost the Mets a middling level prospect today:

TexasRangers.com: Rangers Claim Aarom Baldiris on waivers
The Mets had to clear a spot on their 40-man roster for Yusaku Iriki. This meant exposing a player to a waiver claim. Minor league IF Aarom Baldiris was that player. He was snapped by the Texas Rangers.

The 23-year-old Baldiris batted .275 with 11 HR and 63 RBIs for Double-A Binghamton last season. At one time he was a fairly highly rated 3B prospect in the Mets' system, but was moved to 2B because he lacked power -- and because the Mets already have a pretty good third baseman. He has a real good glove, and projected to be a utility guy at the major league level. He was the Mets 19th rated prospect by Mets Inside Pitch Magazine, who offered the following info on Balderis:

He didn't hit with enough power to be a starting third baseman so the Mets moved him to second base. A very good contact hitter who did manage to hit a career-high 11 home runs this past season, Baldiris isn't the same defensive player at second base. He'll get an opportunity to improve his defense there, but right now, Baldiris projects to be more of a bench player.

Just the breaks, really. They had to expose him and Texas had the roster room to snap him up. I just hope that Iriki doesn't turn into a total bust. Not that Baldiris was a huge prospect, but you hate to see the Mets system lose anyone right now.

  • I quite ambivalent. I think there are too many fringe players on the 40 man.

I however would like to see, the 'Javier Vantins' if they dont make it, seperated and other players like Davanon, or players from the prospect rich...(Tampa/Fla) picked up to feel some needs.

Obviously OF is not a weak spot but pitching is an area which IS depleted.

I definately can see an arm or two picked up.

On another issue: I still dont see Kris Benson opening the season as a Met. I CAN see a deal for TWO young arms and then a deal with Jeff Wever to prove his worth for a yr.

I proposed Kris to LA in a deal similar to the Baez trade for Edwin Jackson. LA and SD are also nice targets in weaker divisions. Chi C also might want to buoy themselves with Kris to offset Prior (trade?) and Wood (inj).

  • I just can't get too worked up about losing this guy -- I think there was less than an even money chance he would ever play for the Mets.

With question marks concerning Pedro and Trachsel's health and Glavine's age, I'd not be in favor of dealing Benson at this time, but I know a lot of Mets fans feel like you do.
