Mets Hot Stove: Sosa? No-sa!!!

Some bad ideas just refuse to go away:

AP: Omar, say it isn't Sosa...
Sammy Sosa is looking for a new baseball home, and the Associated Press is speculating it could be Shea stadium. In an interview with the Dominican newspaper HOY, Sammy was quoted:

We're negotiating with several teams. We're going to make it a surprise... I'm at peace because I trust in what I've done in the past. I'm Sammy Sosa and everyone remembers it.

Sammy expects to make an announcement sometime after this week's winter meetings in Dallas. Some are speculating on the Mets as Sosa's destination because of the long, personal relationship he's enjoyed with Mets' GM Omar Minaya, who was quoted in another Dominican newspaper that Sosa, "only needs an opportunity to play and show that he's recovered."

I suppose as a Mets fan I would prefer Omar signing Sosa to some incentive laden deal if that keeps him from trading Lastings Milledge and Aaron Heilman for Manny Ramirez. If it's possible, though, could we pass on both of these bad ideas? If Sammy couldn't revive his career in a bandbox like Camden Yards, he ain't going to do it at Shea.

  • The thought of this had me outraged last season, when we would have had to trade good players to get this bum. Now, when it will only cost a few bucks, and really at this point in his career the emphasis should be on FEW, what's the risk? Maybe Omar's right and Sammy can revitalize his career in NY. Or, he can stink up the joint through July and we can have Milledge take his spot after the All Star Break in time for the stretch run.

If nothing else, signing Sammy Sosa would end once and for all this silly Ramirez talk.

  • I hear you, Mike. If they signed Sosa, to me this would indicate that they have really given up on Victor Diaz, which would be a shame. We could only hope it would end the Ramirez talk, then it would be worth watching Sammy flounder for a while.
